Interest in dog breeding, working dogs and petkeeping combined with the beginning of mass media culture to create a plethora of canine images in nineteenth century newspapers, magazines and books. A new book by Greg Gubi, A Gallery of Dogs in the 19th Century, reproduces 350 of these images. The growing significance of dog shows is evident, as is the fascination with dog breeds. Numerous Images from Outing and the American Book of the Dog (1891) attest to the nineteenth-century desire to classify dog breeds. In the rest of this blog I reproduce some of my favourite images from the book.
